Step-by-Step Email Recovery Guide

7 min read

Your email is the master key to almost everything else. If you lose access — to a hack, a forgotten password, or a recovery option that no longer works — you need a calm, structured response. KNOMI Cyber walks Australians through this every week, and this is the recovery framework we use.

Step 1: Confirm what's actually wrong

Before starting recovery, work out whether you've been locked out, your password was changed, or your account has been deleted. Try logging in on a known device first — sometimes the issue is a forced 2FA prompt, not a takeover.

Step 2: Use the official recovery flow

For Gmail use g.co/recover. For Outlook use account.live.com/acsr. For iCloud use iforgot.apple.com. Each asks for previous passwords, devices and recovery information. Be patient — the more accurate detail you provide, the higher your chance of success. Never use third-party 'recovery services'; they are almost always scams.

Information to gather before you start

  • Two or three previous passwords
  • Dates and locations of recent logins
  • Names of frequent contacts
  • A trusted device you've signed in on before
  • A working alternative email and phone

Step 3: Clean up after you're back in

Recovery isn't done at login. Change the password, remove unknown sessions and devices, audit forwarding rules and filters (attackers often hide their tracks here), update recovery email and phone, and rotate the passwords of anything important the email account controls — banking, MyGov, social.

KNOMI Cyber's incident specialists do this end-to-end. If your account is critical (business email, parent of a family, professional reputation), we'll also help close down the route the attacker used to get in.
